The things worth knowing before you buy — and after.
Wild Raven products are made with all natural and organic ingredients free from artificial flavours, fragrances or preservatives, palm oil, or mineral oils.
However, even pure and natural ingredients may cause allergies or sensitivities in some people. It is always wise to do a patch test before using any new product. If you experience any adverse reactions please discontinue use.
Each Wild Raven balm and lotion is made slowly by hand, in small batches, so slight variations are a natural part of the process. I use unrefined beeswax so occasionally there may be slight specs present. These are a natural by-product from the beekeeping process and pose no health concerns.
I only use natural ingredients which means there are no preservatives or emulsifiers present in my balms. As a result their shelf life may not be as long as commercial products and the balms may melt or separate if exposed to high temperatures - so please store your balm out of the sun. Generally you can expect your balm to keep well for 9 - 12 months if stored properly. If it does start to melt it is still usable, just put it in the fridge for a few hours to re-solidify.
All my soap is made by hand in small batches. No two are exactly alike, and the bar you receive may differ slightly from those pictured.
The recipes are simple, the ingredients natural, and each bar is left unscented—gentle and well suited to sensitive skin. As always, please refer to the ingredient list if you have known allergies.
Although Wild Raven products are all natural, I do use sodium hydroxide, also known as caustic soda, for the lye component in my soap making process. Lye is an essential element to soap making and there is no way to make soap without it. Lye is what converts butters and oils into soap.
However, during the alchemy of the saponification process the lye is neutralized and by the end of the curing process there is no lye left in the soap. This is standard practice and the way that every soap on the market is made.
And you may be wondering; what even is tallow?
Tallow is the rendered fat of ruminant animals such as cattle and sheep. Solid at room temperature and shelf stable, it has been used for generations in cooking, soapmaking, and candle making.
In soap, tallow creates a hard, long-lasting bar with a very gentle, nourishing quality. Its structure closely resembles the natural lipids found in human skin, making it particularly well suited to all skin types, including those that are sensitive or easily irritated. It is particularly well suited to conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
It also offers an alternative to palm oil, which is widely used in commercial soap for its low cost and hardening properties. Palm oil production has been, and continues to be, a major driver of deforestation in some of the world’s most biodiverse regions, impacting species such as the orangutan, pygmy elephant, and Sumatran rhino. The Wild Raven range does not use palm oil, choosing instead to work with tallow as a more considered option.
While it is possible to make handmade soap without tallow or palm oil, these are naturally softer and tend to wear more quickly.
Tallow itself is a by-product, often discarded. By sourcing it locally and organically, I’m able to reduce waste, support nearby organic farmers, and lessen the carbon footprint of my business. Many plant-based alternatives simply do not grow within my bioregion and must be brought in from far away.
With the transition to tallow soap, I made a conscious decision to refine the quality of my product and redefine the sustainability of my supply chain. Choosing tallow is both a practical and a conscious decision—one that reflects a balance between quality, tradition, and place.
At Wild Raven packaging is approached with the same care as the products themselves. Wherever possible, materials are reusable, recyclable, compostable, or made from recycled sources, and are kept as close to plastic-free as possible (with the exception of some lids or lid liners).
Options are continually reviewed and refined, within the limits of what is currently available. Orders are packed using recycled boxes, paper labels, reused or recycled fill, and biodegradable tape, with production supported by in-house solar power.
